Vegan Cornstrach Slurry is commonly used in Asian cuisine, cornstarch slurry thickens dishes and sauces to the perfect consistency.

This Vegan Cornstarch Slurry Recipe needs to be added when the dish or sauce is already heated as cornstarch requires heat in order to activate its thickening properties. It can be used to thicken soups, stews, sauces, gravies, and much more.

How do you make Vegan Cornstarch Slurry Recipe? 

Simply mix together 1 part cornstarch to 1 part cold water. Make sure it is stirred right before adding to your dish as it can start separate if you leave it. 

Why can’t you just pour cornstarch directly into your hot soup

If you put cornstarch directly into your dish or sauce without making a slurry first, it will create cornstarch lumps. I tried this once when I first started cooking and although the lumps are flavorless, it’s pretty gross to hit the texture of a cornstarch clump in your dish. 😂

What is the ratio between flour and cornstarch?

Cornstarch has twice the thickening superpowers that flour has, so sub in 1 tbsp of cornstarch for every 2 tbsps of flour. Only half the cornstarch is needed to provide the same thickening result.

Ingredients

  • 1 part cornstarch
  • 1 part cold water

Instructions

  • Mix the cornstarch and water together thoroughly right before adding into a sauce, gravy, stew, soup or anything else you'd like to thicken.
  • If you are using 1 tbsp of cornstarch use 1 tbsp of cold water.
